Every digitized design ends its life as a machine file, and every embroidery machine is picky about which ones it will read. Send the wrong format to a production floor and you lose an hour to conversion guesswork. Here is how the common formats actually differ and which one to request for your setup.
What the letters actually mean
Formats split into two families. Flat formats (DST, EXP) store stitch geometry — movement, stitch type, trims, jumps, color-change stops — but little or no color information. Machine-native formats (PES, JEF, HUS, VIP, VP3, XXX) wrap that geometry in a container that also carries thread colors, hoop size, and machine-specific settings.
- DST — the Tajima format and the industry interchange standard. Any commercial digitizer can produce it, and nearly every commercial machine reads it. Thread colors are not stored, so the operator assigns them from a run sheet.
- EXP — the Melco/Bernina flat format. Geometry like DST, slightly different encoding.
- PES — Brother and Babylock home machines. Carries color sequence and hoop data.
- JEF — Janome, Elna, Kenmore home machines.
- VP3 — current format for Pfaff creative and Husqvarna Viking top-line machines; supersedes HUS and VIP.

Why we still send a DST master
A DST file is the lowest-common-denominator source of truth: it contains exactly the stitches we produced, with nothing added by a converter. When you order from us you get the DST plus whatever machine-specific copies your shop needs. If a future software version re-converts the design, the DST stays identical.
Three practical warnings
- Do not chain-convert between home formats. PES → JEF → VP3 conversions re-map colors and can silently shift underlay settings. Ask us for a fresh export instead.
- Check your hoop limit before ordering. A design built for a 4×4 in hoop will not run on a machine whose largest frame is smaller than the design extent, regardless of format.
- Color order lives in the native file. If your operators rely on on-screen thread charts rather than a printed run sheet, request the native format so the palette travels with the design.
