The most common surprise in this trade: a logo that looks perfect on a business card produces a muddy, broken patch of thread on a polo chest. The artwork was never the problem — the translation was. Digitizing does not trace pixels; it rebuilds your mark as stitch objects, and thread obeys physical limits that ink does not.

Thin strokes do not survive at garment scale

A left-chest logo typically runs 3 to 4 inches wide. Shrink a corporate mark with 0.25pt hairline rules down to that size and those strokes measure well under 1mm — thinner than the needle itself. At that width a satin stitch has nothing to anchor to: the line breaks up, the fabric shows through, and corners fill in.

Our redraw rule: any stroke below roughly 1mm at final production size gets thickened to a stitchable weight or removed entirely. Outline rings become open fills or get dropped if they are decorative. It changes the logo less than you would expect, because viewers read overall shape first — but it must be deliberate, not discovered after a bad sew-out.

Gradients cannot be stitched

Thread comes in discrete colors. There is no such thing as a smooth fade in embroidery — only steps between solid shades. A gradient left untouched becomes either a hard banding mess or thousands of extra stitches chasing a blend no one will see at arm's length.

The fix happens before digitizing: flatten the gradient to two or three spot colors, or replace it with a solid field plus an outline. If a client insists on a stepped blend, we quote it honestly — each step adds a color change on the machine and slows production.

Small text closes up

Lettering below about 0.25in cap height is where logos go to die. Serif faces and tight kerning turn into solid rectangles; counters (the holes in e, a, o) fill in completely. Below 0.15in even block capitals merge.

Standard simplifications, in order of preference:

  • Drop the tagline entirely — nobody can read it at chest size anyway.
  • Replace the wordmark font with a clean block face designed for small stitching.
  • Increase letter spacing (kerning out) so satin columns stay separated.
  • Move legal text or URLs to a sleeve label or back yoke where there is room.
